It’s been 73 years since the first F-Series truck rolled off the assembly line. Now, we’re seeing something equally revolutionary: the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, an all electric pickup backed by decades of innovation. Lightning, meet bottle.

At Discount Tire, we’re big fans of EVs, including everything from supercar-style Teslas to future off-road rigs like the electric Jeep the GMC Hummer and the Rivian R1T.

We’re charged up and ready for the F-150 Lightning because it heralds the entrance of EVs into the mainstream automotive world. After all, the F-150 is the best selling vehicle in the U.S. over the last several decades.

2022 FORD F-150 LIGHTNING SPECS

Let’s break down the 2022 Ford Lightning’s specs. Powered by dual electric motors, the Lightning cranks out up to 770ft-lbs of torque with 563 horses driving all four wheels, all the time.

That means big performance. According to Ford, the Lightning goes 0-60 in approximately 4.5 seconds—faster than the Ford Raptor. To quote President Joe Biden during his tour of Ford’s EV facility and impromptu test drive, “this sucker’s quick!”

Plus, given the train-towing stunt Ford pulled in 2019, not to mention the F-150 Lightning’s 10,000-pound towing capacity, we’re pretty sure it’ll be more than able to handle any workload or payload you throw at it.

But the real question is: what’s its range? All models except the Platinum come with a standard range of up to 230 miles. But with the optional battery extender, the Lightning is predicted to get an EPA estimated 300 mile battery range.

(Keep in mind, the max towing capacity is estimated based on XLT and Lariat model performance with the extended-range battery and the Max Trailer Tow package. And the impressive horsepower and torque numbers are also specific to models with the optional extended-range battery.)

We can’t wait to see the Lightning on the road and in our service bays when the time comes for new tires (or wheels).

2022 FORD F-150 LIGHTNING TIRES

While Ford hasn’t released the full details on its OE tire size, we can use the data it shared to get an idea of what tires the Lightning might strike with.

According to Ford, the F-150 Lightning will be available in four trim levels, the commercial, the XLT, the Lariat and the Platinum. We know the Lightning XLT will roll out on 18" wheels. Meanwhile, the Lariat will likely rock 20-inch rims and the Platinum will sit on huge 22" wheels.

Using these sizes and the 2021 F-150 as a starting point, we get a pretty good idea of the potential tire sizes for the Lightning.

Our money is on the following OE tire sizes, depending on trim level:
We’re stoked about these options because they provide a great range of tire choices, whether you want a comfortable and range-improving highway tire, an all-terrain tire that’s ready to hit the trail or support your Lightning’s overlanding gear—or even a hardcore mud terrain tire for when the going is roughest.

Given the F-150’s history as an all-around workhorse that functions equally well as a commuter, work truck, and off-roader, an OE mud terrain may not be likely. But with 4WD, extreme torque, huge horsepower, skid plates and a battery-protecting exoskeleton, we know some of you out there will be chomping at the bit to take your Lightning off the grid (no pun intended).

FORD F-150 LIGHTNING HIGHWAY TIRES

While we can’t say for sure what type of tires the Ford Lightning will roll off the line on when it’s unleashed in 2022, a set of highway tires will likely be the OE choice like most other F-150s.

BRIDGESTONE DUELER LTH

Bridgestone Dueler LTH

Our first pick for the lower trim levels of the Lightning is an offering from Bridgestone, the Dueler LTH. Not only does this highway tire ensure a long-lasting, comfortable ride, it also looks good doing it.

With its circumferential grooves, lateral notches and sipes, the LTH will give the new Ford all-season traction and load-bearing stability. Plus, with its semi-solid rib design, the LTH provides all the grip you need to harness the power the Lightning dishes out.

Whether you’re hauling a load, towing a trailer or carting your crew around, the Dueler LTH can handle it.

MICHELIN DEFENDER LTX M/S

Michelin Defender LTX MS

Up next is an all-time favorite: the Michelin Defender LTX M/S.

There’s a reason you can find this tire on just about every pickup or SUV on the market, and it’s not just for its looks. This tire is all about safety, ride comfort and controlled handling. It also boasts shorter winter and wet stopping distances than competing tires, meaning it can help the Lightning conquer foul weather when it needs grip the most.

Want to wield lightning like Zeus? You can with the Michelin Defender!

NITTO NT420V

Nitto NT420V

This tire may seem like a different choice, but it’s actually in keeping with the spirit of a high-powered EV.

The Nitto NT420V is a street truck tire that’s all about performance. With a stylish asymmetrical tread design featuring extra wide shoulder blocks and a variable pitch tread design, the NT420V has all the performance and panache you can ask for when whipping your Lightning around town.

FORD F-150 LIGHTNING ALL-TERRAIN TIRES

If you demand the utmost from your ride, including the ability to handle the rigors of the trail (or worksite), these all-terrain tires would pair up great with the Lightning’s instant torque from its dual motor drivetrain.

GOODYEAR WRANGLER ULTRATERRAIN AT

Goodyear Wrangler Ultraterrain AT

Next on the list of all-terrain tires for the F-150 Lightning is the Goodyear Wrangler UltraTerrain AT.

FORD F-150 LIGHTNING MUD TIRES

While the F-150 Lightning may not look like a dedicated off-road machine, it’s packing serious firepower in terms of torque and ponies. Plus, with its 4x4 drivetrain, we know that some drivers are going to switch it into off-road mode and leave it there, regardless of battery range.

We’ve got the mud tires you need to go toe-to-toe with mother nature and come out on top.
